What is a dimmer switch?

A dimmer switch allows you to control the current or voltage of a lamp allowing you to adjust the light intensity. For example, if you are in a working area or have space in your home where you do a lot of work a more clearer and brighter light is needed, we call this functional lighting as it is more of practical use.

Which lamps can be dimmed with a dimmer switch?

Not all lighting can be dimmed, so it is important you take a number of things into account. Incandescent and halogen lights are easily dimmable as they both use the same simple technique. Incandescent and halogen lamps on a 230/240V can be dimmed with any dimmer switch and they are often most popular. However, you need to pay more attention to energy saving and fluorescent tube lights as they are no dimmable because they work on the ballast.

The type of electronics used in a bulb or a lamp fixture determines whether or not the LED light is dimmable. All LEDs are not dimmable, it usually depends on the type of LED you have, this is often noted on the package or description of an LED light. Dimmer switches that work on phase cut-off are often the best dimmers for LED lighting.

The use of a standard or traditional dimmer switch can cause problems if used with an LED light, they will start to buzz, flass or vibrate which can cause damage. There are specific dimmer switches for LEDs when required to use with a 12V or 230V LED lights.
