Installing garden lighting: Ground Spotlights

With garden ground spotlights you can create beautiful mood lighting in your garden. There are 2 main types, spike lights and ground spots. Spike lights are perfect to pierce soft ground, such as earth and ground spots can be attached or installed into the ground, such as pavement, gravel or wooden decking. Ground spots will shine the light directly upwards whereas with spike lights you can direct the lighting where you need it.

Tip 1: Attach a piece of ground cable to your spot

Installing ground spots is a complex task. If you have any doubts, then it is best to leave the installation to a qualified electrician. If you are going to install them yourself, there are a few important things to remember. Use a piece of grey ground cable to mount the ground spot. Underneath the spot is the attachment where you attach the cord and ensure that the ground spot is well sealed.

Tip 2: Connect the cables with a cable sleeve

Ensure the ground cable is connected to the ground spot with a cable sleeve. This is to make sure the the cabling is watertight. The junction box also needs to be in a watertight covering and these are usually filled with resin. Inside this box you can link two or moe cables if needed and from there can be placed safely under the ground. Make sure that the cables are tested well before than following the cable sleeve with resin. Note that once this has been done, no further changes can be made to the connection so it is important to check the connections prior to this step.

Tip 3: Choose the right surface

Ground spots must always be placed on a flat surface - never a pit or a hump. If you are placing the ground spots into gravel, it must be in a pit of at least 30 cm diameter or more. This is to ensure that it can absorb water or exposed moisture as quickly as possible.

Tip 4: Choose the right IP class

Of course ground spots place outdoors need to be waterproof, however there can be a varying degree of protection from spotlight to spotlight. Therefore it is very important to be fully aware of the IP classification of the ground spot in question. As ground spots inevitably have to deal with rainfall and other forms of humidity, it is safest to choose a ground spot with an IP68 rating. This means it is protected against water under pressure. You can often find ground spots with IP65 or IP67, these also offer protection for almost all elements.
