Installing recessed spotlights? Here's how!

Installing recessed spotlights can be complicated for some. However, with our instructions it can be an easy job!

What you need:

  • Tape-measure

  • Pencil

  • Screwdriver

  • Electrical tester

What you need:

Step 1. Turn off the power and read the instructions properly

Switch off the power before you start installing. The dimensions of the recessed lights are on the instructions sheet, the distance of installation between the recessed light and wall is usually one meter, however the space in between each recessed light is up to you and what your preference is. Measure where you want each recessed light to be installed by marking a pencil on the ceiling.

Step 1. Turn off the power and read the instructions properly

Step 2. Drill the marked holes for each spot in the ceiling

Before you start drilling, you will need to ensure that the correct size hole is drilled. By now you should know what the built-in depth and diameter of each recessed spotlight is, if you over drill by few millimeters it doesn't matter that much. Ensure you are wearing protective eye goggles while drilling.

Step 2. Drill the marked holes for each spot in the ceiling

Step 3. Insert the recessed spotlights

After drilling space for the recessed spotlights to be installed, make sure you check that you have electricity for each hole drilled by using the electrical tester. Once you confirm that there is a current flowing to each hole, switch off the power. Every spotlight has an opening crown where main wires are connected, connect the black and blue wire to the opening and secure it into place by using a screwdriver to tighten it. If the spotlight is earthed, you must also attach the earth wire (yellow-green wire) to the opening crown which is located in the middle. Push all electrical wires into the ceiling and out of sight, lock the springs in place and insert the spotlight into the hole and fully fit it in. Repeat this step for all remaining recessed spotlights.

Step 3. Insert the recessed spotlights

NOTE:

Spotlights can be come very hot when using halogen bulbs, this emits heat and may cause fire. If the recessed spotlight is not fire rated do not install in any area where there is insulation material in the ceiling. You must purchase fire hoods or fire caps if you wish to install a non fire rated recessed light.

Step 4. Insert bulbs

Finally, insert the bulbs into your spotlights. Depending on the type of recessed spotlight you have installed, the bulbs can be installed with the spotlights fully fitted or you will need to insert them through the ceiling which means clipping the springs.

Step 4. Insert bulbs

Step 5: No transformer is required for each recessed spotlight.

Do you want to install multiple recessed spotlights using one transformer, but you only have one main power connection? In this case you are able to create a daisy chain by easily creating a loop. The mains connection you initially installed each recessed light, take a new blue and black wire and connect it to the next installed recessed light. Continuously repeat this until you have done so for all of your lights, if its earthed ensure that you also connect the earth wire (yellow-green) through the middle terminal and do the same for all lights.
