Make a functional lighting plan yourself

Step 1: Make a plan

Draw a floor plan or a sketch of the space you need to plan for. Clearly draw where everything is in that space, such as the windows, doors, height of the ceiling and all the furniture that is in the room.

Step 2: Outline what takes place in each part of the room

Outlining what takes place in each part of the room will help determine the type of lighting you need on the basis of functionality. For example, if you read and watch tv on your sofa you might need different types of lamps to help you achieve both. The dining table is also another area if it includes in your plan, for some dining table is more than a place where we eat it could be a place where we do a bit of craft work, home work for the children or a nice genera lspace to enetertain therefore the type of light that is needed must accommodate the functionality of the space.

Step 3: Indicate where the light should come from

On your floor plan as you have now drawn an outline of your space, you need to indicate where lighting should be coming from. Start with the basic lighting need for the entire room, then move on to distinguish betwen functional and mood lighting for the specific parts of the room.

Step 4: Identify where sockets and switches are located in the chosen space

Include where each switch and socket is in the floor plan for the chosen room, this way you are able to identify where you are able to use certain lights or if you need to ass new switches and sockets as part of lighting plan.

Step 5: Select specific light fixtures for each part of the room

For different parts of the room choose which types of lamps you want to mount or hang, this gives you an indication of style and decor but more importantly function and atmosphere. Mark this on your floor plan, by now you see a build up of a complete design of your room.
