There are more than 100 different bulb fittings for lamps. However, we have listed the 8 most common and used bulbs for you and the type of lamps they are most suitable for. Bulb types that start with E are screw fittings and those that start with GU are click fittings.

 

E27

E27 bulb

E27 is probably one of the most common and used bulb in lamps and it is sometimes referred to as Edison large screw. E27 bulbs come in incandescent, CFL, halogen and LED fittings. The bulb has a 27mm screw cap which is what is fitted into a lamp, it is suitable for 230/240V.

 

E14

E14 bulb

E14 is the smaller version of an E14 bulb and it is also one of the most common and used bulbs in lamps and it is sometimes referred to as small Edison screw. E14 bulbs come in incandescent, CFL, halogen and LED fittings. The bulb has a 14mm screw cap which is what is fitted into a lamp, it is suitable for 230/240V.

 

GU10

GU10 bulb

A GU10 fitting has two-pins to connect into a lamp. This type of bulb is mainly used for recessed spotlights and surface spotlights. The distance between the two-pins are usually 10mm apart, they are put into the available holes in the lamp and slightly turned to click into place. They are suitable for 230/240V.

 

GU5.3

GU5.3 Bulb

A GU5.3 or MR16 bulb has two-pins that are thin and small to connect into a lamp. This type of bulb is compatiable for lights that are used in wet areas such as bathrooms, outdoor lights or kitchen areas as it is suitable for 12V connections as it is the safest voltage for wet and exposed areas. The distance between the two-pins are usually 5.3mm apart, they are put into the available holes in the lamp and slightly click into place. Please note that any 12V light source requires transformer.

 

G4

G4 Bulb

A G4 bulb is similar to GU5.3 as it also has two-pins that are thin and small to connect into a lamp, however the difference is that it is usually used for decorative and atmospheric lighting. You would usually find these bulbs in floor lamps, lamps or pendant lights. G4 bulbs are 12V connections and require transformers to work. The distance between the two-pins are usually 4mm apart, they are put into the available holes in the lamp and slightly click into place.

 

G9

G9 Bulbs

G9 bulbs has 2 long pins to connect into a lamp. These types of bulbs are usually used in smaller lamps such as wall or ceiling lights that have small connection points. The distance between the two pins are 9mm, they are slotted into place without the need to do anything else.

 

GX53

GX53 Bulbs

GX53 bulbs are rounder and flatter like a disc and have 2 pins on either side. They are usually used in flatter lights such spotlights, ceiling lamps or floor lamps and are high voltage that is suitable for 230/240V. Easy to install and use, allign the pins to the required hole and slot it in place with a slight turn to click in.

 

G53

G53 Bulbs

G53 bulbs are also known as AR111 and have an overall diameter of 111mm and are usually used in larger spotlights or recessed lights. They are seen as spotlights themselves as they are either screwed into place or come with clamps to fit into a spotlight frame. They are 12V, which means they require transformers.
